The Schmidt camera and subsequent detector can be protected from overillumination and falling material ( e.g. when changing the grating) by closing a mechanical shutter in front of the first surface. Pulling the lever [W] on Side 4 up and to the left opens the shutter, and pushing it down with the end touching the lip of the spectrograph, closes the shutter.
