Weather Report for May 29, 2011

A very windy night. The wind forced the dome to be closed at about 2330 MST as it reached 40mph with peak gusts of 50mph+. About a half dozen blazars were successfully observed before the wind prematurely ended the night. The sky was clear all night long with seeing between 1 and 1.5 arcsec before the dome closure, though the telescope was often shaken by the wind, which degraded the image quality. This is very uncharacteristic weather on Kitt Peak for late May and the wind is expected to be just as bad, or even worse tomorrow night. The hope is that no wildfires will get started in Arizona while the wind conditions are this severe.
